Our Sunday Habit: Biking at the NBO Biking Lessons ground in BGC

19 November 2017

We feel fortunate that every Sunday, the kids get a chance to learn how to bike at the NBO Bike Lessons ground in BGC.  Well, actually Dana's getting better but Dylan still has a long way to go.

We savor these moments because kids grow up so fast.  At least we're all having fun as a family. :)

Attending Gandhi's Baptism

05 November 2017

Today marked the Christening of Baby Gandhi, the son of friends, Orvin and Josie :)  We're glad to be part of your celebration! :)

Dylan's UN Day : Tasting dishes from different countries

19 October 2017

It's that time again for United Nations' Day!  This time, I'm glad this it's not about the costume but the culture of the nation that's being taught so Thanks Teacher Ressie!

The kids were asked to select a country and bring to school a sample of the dishes that represent it.  Dylan naturally gravitated to Japan and we brought several helpings of Tamago Onigiri :)

Another round of Free Bike Lessons at the BGC courtesy of the National Bicycle Organization

01 October 2017

It's another Sunday and we all went back to BGC in Taguig for another round of Free Bike Lessons courtesy of the National Bicycle Organization.  This time, we arrived earlier than our first trip and we found that more people have become aware of the Free Bike Rides and Lessons since there were now more people riding their bikes.  Let's see how the kids did this time :)

Dylan's Foundation Day participation in school

28 September 2017

This is another first for Dylan education-wise.  Today, he celebrated the school's 95th Year Anniversary together with his classmates, schoolmates, teachers and staff.  They prepared a dance routine and performed it as part of the school's Foundation Day Celebration.

As any parent with a child on the autism spectrum, events like these mark milestones to be remembered.  It's special because it shows your child's progress in dealing with crowds. It shows how your child copes with a specific routine (like dancing) and ability to follow directions.  It tests your child's patience while waiting for his turn.  Dylan exceeded all of these today and I'm so proud of him!

An afternoon at the BMW Xpo 2017

17 September 2017

After our biking adventure earlier in the day, we headed to the BMW Xpo 2017 which was just across the street.  Models on display include vehicles from the BMW 5 and 7 Series, including motorcycles from BMW Motorrad.  There was also a test drive area for customers.  Kids also had a special section.

Free Bike Lessons and Bike Riding at the BGC courtesy of the National Bicycle Organization

17 September 2017

After a tiring day at the 2017 Manila International Book Fair yesterday, I didn't think we would have the energy to go bike riding today.  But the kids were driven to learn and wanted to go biking and so we found ourselves at the BGC-PruLife UK Family Zone.

The Bikes are Free.  Lessons are Free.  Just Enjoy!

Wow! 2 floors at the 2017 Manila International Book Fair #2017MIBF

16 September 2017

It's that time of the year again when everyone is on their toes and itching to get into the 2017 Manila International Book Fair.  Since we were here last year, we kind of knew what to expect.  But this year, there's more in store because there was an additional exhibition space on the 2nd Floor which meant more books and stuff to browse and buy from.

Still, it was surprising to see long lines outside of the SMX which made us feel uncertain at first because we thought that was the line to get in.  But, as we neared the entrance gates, it seemed that it was the line to buy tickets from.  We were fortunate that I had printed out tickets from the UST Facebook page and we were able to get in without any fuss.

Honestly, this time, we were really aiming for specific books and other school supplies but we still took our time visiting the other exhibition booths :)

Dylan's class is a beneficiary of a former preschool's educational materials and furnishings

09 September 2017

A great big Thank You to Mommy Myles, Daddy Jovy and Sir Ramil of Books for a Cause for granting us the privilege of receiving much-needed educational materials and furnishings from your former preschool.  We are in awe of your generosity and your kindness will go a long way because all this will help so many generations of Special Education/Autism students. Thank You !

Dylan helps with his class' room renovations

27 August 2017

What I've learned now that Dylan is in public school is that if you want something done for the class, you have to do it yourself.  Today, my co-parents and I banded together to put up bulletin boards and Teacher's whiteboard and constructed stacking shelves for Dylan's class.  Dylan was very excited to be part of a project like this and it taught him the value of working hard and appreciating the end result.

On Board the Mexican Training Tall Ship, Buque Escuela Cuauhtemoc

06 August 2017

Today, we went on board the Mexican Training Tall Ship, BE Cuauhtemoc, while it was docked at the South Harbor.  The ship was at our port as part of its 2017 Instruction Cruise where 4th Year cadets of the Heroic Naval Military school will circumnavigate the BE Cuauhtemoc across 15 ports and 12 countries.  They are also celebrating their Centenary of the Constitution and the 35th Anniversary of the Ship.

NDPR Finale: Sports Festival!

21 July 2017

The theme today is Speed because today is the last day of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation celebration at Dylan's school! Their final activity is a Sports Festival and all Special Education classes are participating.  That is why Dylan is wearing a "The Flash" shirt while I"m wearing a Ferrari shirt LOL

Assembly time was at 0730 and yep, even though it's a bit early for Dylan, we were both up and full of energy at this time of the morning haha

There were a number of sports activities that each class can participate in.  Parents and teachers had prepared several loot bags for the kids who participate and special prizes for those who win in friendly competition with other classes.

Dylan participated in all 7 activities though it's too bad I failed to take pictures or videos of some of them because I was busy assisting and cheering him on haha

NDPR Week Continuation: Film Showing and Food Festival

19-20 July 2017

Continuing with the celebration of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabiliation Week, Dylan's class participated in a Film Showing (Day 3)  and a Food Festival (Day 4).

You may wonder why there's a Film showing during NDPR week.  It's actually to test how long these kids can sit, focus and watch a full-length movie.  To normal people, sitting still for the whole length of a movie is a breeze.  But for special kids like Dylan and his friends, it's actually pretty difficult.

On Day 4, the food festival was done to encourage kids to prepare their own meals and to teach them to appreciate good food.  The kids made waffles!

Dylan's class is Munting Aklatan #95 thanks to Books for a Cause

20 July 2017

Today, Dylan's class became Munting Aklatan #95.  We were fortunate to be the beneficiaries of books for Dylan's Autism class courtesy of Sir Ramil Sumangil from the Books for a Cause advocacy.

Books for a Cause receives any and all books (and even toys) and in turn donates these to people who need them.  Thank you for our books!! :)

How we applied for Dylan's Person with Disability (PWD) ID

17 July 2017

The Person with Disability (PWD) ID basically serves as the PWD's passport to benefits and privileges.  These benefits include discounts in theaters, hotels, fast food establishments, groceries, medicines, diagnostic procedures, dental services and domestic ticket fares; educational assistance; access to express lanes and even tax exemptions for people who care for and are living with PWD's.

Dylan has been diagnosed a long time ago but we never really pursued getting one.  It was mostly because I thought that, as with most governmental procedures, it would just be tedious and time-consuming.

But, now, knowing all these benefits that he should be entitled to, and hearing from other parents how easy it was for them to get their kids' their PWD IDs, well I thought I should give it a shot.  Here's our story.

Opening of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week at Dylan's school

17 July 2017

Today is the opening of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation week at Dylan's school.  All Special Education classes came together to participate in the opening ceremonies.  Dylan isn't averse to attending large gatherings and is actually pretty stable when it comes to social events so I wasn't worried.  He was actually pretty excited to participate when he found out that they were supposed to dance in front of everyone.

It was truly an enriching experience for both Dylan and me because we got to see and interact with other Special Kids and Teens and we marvel at their capacity and determination for learning!  Kudos to the kids! Thank you to to their teachers and parents for their patience and support.  The future looks bright for all of us!

Dylan's Nutrition Month Celebration in School (2017)

14 July 2017

It was Dylan's Nutrition Month celebration today!  I actually dread these school events because it would mean having to be "artsy" and creative when making the costumes and props.  BUT, if it meant that my child will be enjoying himself, then I'm on board.  And today, Dylan really enjoyed himself!

Dylan's first Earthquake Drill in School

29 June 2017

Today is the scheduled Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill.  To be honest, I completely forgot about it until we got to Dylan's school.  Dylan and I always make it a point to be early in school so we arrived at 2PM.  As we went through the gate, we clearly heard the sound of an alarm blaring and I knew immediately that it was the start of a fire/earthquake drill.

At first, we weren't sure whether we should even participate since his class isn't due to begin yet but I thought if it were a real event, then I decided that Dylan should know what to do so we just waited for a while near the other students.

Over the megaphone, I could hear the school guard call the attention of the other parents who were idling about.  They were told to proceed to a designated space for parents too.  I thought, "Yeah, we should know where to go especially if we're caught in the middle of it."  But I think that some parents weren't really into it.  :)

Anyway, Dylan sat with the other Kindergarten students.  I instructed him to follow what they're doing.  I told him it was the "Duck and Cover" position.  He immediately picked up on covering his head with his notebook saying that it was to protect himself from things falling on his head.  Good Job Dylan!

It was a pretty big school so it took them 5 minutes to get everyone outside and around the grounds.  There were some students who were sneaking out and trying to go back to their class but the teachers surrounding them called them out haha

Everyone calmly went back to their respective classrooms after that.

Things were back to normal in a few minutes too.

All in all, it was a good experience for Dylan and I hope he remembers it.  It actually made me wonder what happens to all the SPED students during a situation like this.  Huh.

An educational and enjoyable visit at the Manga Hokusai Manga exhibit at the Ateneo Art Gallery

17 June 2017

"Manga Hokusai Manga will explore the similarities and differences between modern Japanese manga and Katsushika Hokusai's manga and introduce the charms of this unique field of Japanese culture".  As soon as I read this blurb from a post on the Japan Foundation Manila's FB page, I was immediately intrigued and so penned in the date on our calendar.  Anything that will get us to learn more about our favorite manga is worth a visit.  Plus, admission is free!

At the center of the exhibit is Katsushika Hokusai's "Hokusai Manga".  Browsing through all the panels encourages you to understand, appreciate and discern just how their (Hokusai and his contemporaries) works contributed to the evolution of manga.

The exhibit runs from June 17 to July 28, 2017 at the Rizal Library Special Collections Building, Ateneo de Manila University.  This exhibit is presented by the Ateneo Art Gallery, the Japan Foundation, Manila and the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines.

Dylan is back in school!

12 June 2017

Last June 05, classes in public schools began nationwide.  It was Dylan's first day back to school after awhile and I was apprehensive because it was also the first time that we will be part of the public school system.  Private SPED (Special Education) schools are pretty expensive so we considered ourselves fortunate that there was a public school which has a Special Education department near us.  We didn't have to shell out any money for tuition.  Still, we felt a bit of a culture shock as we continually adjusted with our new environment.

Mom-daughter bonding at the "Doodling and Lettering" workshop presented by the National Museum and Dong-A

18 May 2017

As part of the National Museum of the Philippines' celebration of International Museum Day as well as a post-Mother's Day activity, the National Museum in partnership with Dong-A Philippines sponsored the Doodling and Lettering for Mothers" workshop and Dana and I had the privilege to attend.  We learned new tricks and were challenged to test our artistic capabilities.  :)

A Happy Mother's Day at Ponte Rialto Ristorante Italiano

14 May 2017

Today is Mother's Day and as a treat, we all went to Ponte Rialto Ristorante Italiano to savor their authentic Italian dishes.  It's been quite a while since we were last there and Patrick thought that since it was Mother's Day today, I deserve a treat and so here we are!

Hayabusa Back to the Earth at the National Planetarium

09 May 2017

Today marked the start of the new show schedule for the week  at the National Planetarium.  Last week, we were fortunate that we were able to watch "Journey to a Billion Suns" twice in a day when the National Planetarium released the news that they were extending their free entrance policy for the month of May.

Though we missed the first two showings of "A Planet for Goldilocks" we were just in time to watch the show, "Hayabusa Back to the Earth".

Ramen Kuroda to satisfy our ramen cravings :)

02 May 2017

If we're talking about comfort food, Japanese ramen is what we want :)  So, once we discovered Ramen Kuroda, we always want to eat there :)  After our day at the National Planetarium, we were starving and in need of Ramen Kuroda's sustenance :)

Super enjoyable haircut experience at Kaizen 10 Minute Haircut, SM City Manila

02 May 2017

This was our first time at Kaizen 10 Minute Haircut in SM City Manila.  We were actually looking for a salon because Dylan needed a haircut and we simply chanced upon Kaizen while strolling around the mall.  Little did we know how much of an enjoyable haircut experience we were to have....

Free Admission to the National Planetarium (extended until May 30, 2017)

02 May 2017

The National Museum extended their "Free Admission to the National Planetarium" policy until May 30, 2017 in celebration of the National Heritage Month.  Actually, I was anxiously waiting for this announcement and was hoping that they would extend since the original Free Admission policy was only until April 30.  I thought that today was the best time to drop by since not many people can make time to visit except for those who live nearby.  I was right.  There wasn't much of a line and we were actually able to watch TWO shows! haha Okay, they were both "Journey to a Billion Suns" but still, we got to watch TWO shows! :)  We'd like to tell you what to expect, what you can see while in the venue and other relevant information for your trip to the National Planetarium.

The Hyundai Veloster, Ma Mon Luk and walking around SM Mall of Asia

23 April 2017

So Patrick has had the Hyundai Veloster for the week and this is the last day we're able to ride in it as a family.  We took it for a ride to the 2017 Trans Sport Show.  This post is about the day that we had - dining at Ma Mon Luk and stuff we bought while walking around SM Mall of Asia after we took a break from the Trans Sport Show.

Walking around the 2017 Trans Sport Show

23 April 2017

It's summer and it's time for another car show!  This time, we went to the 2017 Trans Sport Show held between April 20-23 at the SMX Convention Center.  Patrick actually covered the event for Carmudi, so if you want to see better photos of the cars, check out the article here.  The Trans Sport Show's main attraction is the Nostalgic and Contemporary Car Competition but there are other events like the Moto Builds Pilipinas and plenty of automotive after-sales, custom-build services and related businesses to complete the experience.

DIY: How to Replace your Toilet Fill Valve

22 April 2017

Minor plumbing problems are easy enough to fix if you have the right tools and a bit of courage.  Knowing how to repair plumbing problems yourself can save you some money since you don't have to hire someone else to do it for you.  I've replaced our faulty toilet fill valve on my own before and I found it to be easy enough.  You actually just have to follow the instructions on the package! LOL  Here's how the kids and I did it.

Summer Swimming with the family at Eastridge Athletic Park

13 April 2017

The best outings are those that happen unexpectedly.  As is the case today when we went to Eastridge Athletic Park for a day of swimming simply because my sister Sha and her family were already there!  She did mention that today might be the ideal time to meet up for the summer but we never actually finalized any plans.  The Eastridge Athletic Park is located within the Eastridge Golf Club development in Binangonan Rizal.  We were only able to get in because we were guests of  a member but we had to pay an entrance fee of P200/head (adult) and P100/head (child) which I think were reasonable enough rates.  We were able to bring in food and beverage (no corkage).

Our first trip to UP Town Center

07 April 2017

Another food craving for Rodic's Tapsilog yielded a surprise trip to UP Town Center. Whenever we pass by the area, Patrick always wishes to visit the new shopping destination but we've always run out of time.  Today, he finally fulfilled his wish and we spent about three hours just walking around the place and visiting the shops.

2017 MIAS: We attended the Mazda Press Conference on the new Mazda MX-5RF

02 April 2017

Occasionally, Patrick would leave us to cover a Press Conference while at the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS).  We would find ourselves wandering around the Main Hall and the rest of the exhibits until he finished his work.  I think the last time we attended a Press Conference as a family was for the Manila Speed Show with Marlon Stockinger.  This time, we were allowed to attend Mazda's Luncheon Press Conference and what a blast we had! :)

2017 MIAS: 13th Annual Manila International Auto Show

02 April 2017

We've always gone to the annual Manila International Auto Shows.  This time, it's a bit special because it's Patrick's first MIAS event that he's covering under the Carmudi group.  Though the event itself goes on for four days (March 30 - April 02) at the World Trade Center, we only came with him on the last day.  But still, we all were excited at seeing all these brand new cars! :)

A Day in the Life - Favorites: Toyota 86, Lego and Charlie's Burgers

01 April 2017

When you have a car as awesome as the Toyota 86 delivered to your home (in our case, as a test drive vehicle) what will you do?  Well, of course! Take it for a spin!  I remember the last time we had a Toyota 86 for a week, Patrick really did take it for a spin - drifting it at a parking lot no less!  But, we're not doing that again. Instead, we just went for our favorites - Lego and great burgers at Charlie's Grind and Grill (Pasig).

The simple joys of Dylan's birthday

18 March 2017

Dylan's birthday came bright and early.  We all had a hand in choosing the activities for Dylan's birthday and everyone was just itching to get on with the plans.  It was rather hard to narrow down the choices because, after all, we just wanted Dylan to have what he wants but due to time and financial constraints, naturally we had to compromise.  The following post tells of what we ended up with.

Celebrating Dana's birthday at Sambokojin!! :)

03 March 2017

Today, we celebrated Dana's birthday after finishing up with Dylan's doctor's check-up.  When asked what she wanted to do for her birthday, there was no hesitation when she responded, "Sambokojin!".  I guess, she enjoyed herself so much the last time we were there she wanted to experience it again.  So, we all went back, together with Den and Edwin!

It also helped that Sambokojin has a Birthday Treat Promo :)

The ANA Yose 2017: Rakugo in English event at the RCBC Plaza

19 February 2017

On February 19, Dana and I were fortunate to have won tickets to the ANA Yose 2017 - Rakugo in English show held at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in RCBC Plaza.  Rakugo is a 400-year old Japanese sit-down comedy tradition where the performer, armed only with a fan and an oversized towel, enacts hilarious stories that fire up the imagination.  This year's performance headlines Rakugo Master Kaishi Katsura with Asakichi Katsura (Rakugo Master), Eika Utsumi (Shamisen Musical Performer) and Lucky Mai (Traditional Comic performer).

Get-togethers Galore: A Week of Meet-ups with Great Friends

20 February 2017

I can't even begin to describe how hectic this week has been.  For as long as I can remember, this has been the first and only time when my week has been packed with get-togethers with friends.  So, I'm putting together all of these events in one blog post hehe  It's really nice to catch up with friends, whether they're High School mates or former co-workers.  It's fun!

First Family Outing of 2017 : Star City at the CCP Complex

28 January 2017

Star City is a theme park located at the CCP Complex, Roxas Boulevard, Manila.  It provides hours of enjoyable, thrilling rides, games, entertainment and dining experience for the whole family.  The last time we were here, the kids were still young and so weren't able to experience the more adventurous rides.  Now, we were given 50% discounted tickets and we braved the throng of people on the last weekend of January. Read about how we fared :)

2016 Christmas Celebrations are made special because of FAMILY!

25 December 2016

For a while, the spirit of Christmas waned in our household because, really, the whole of 2016 has been more of "downs" than "ups".  But, it's not in our nature to let that get us down for a long time so we rallied and with the help of Family and Framily (Friends who are Family), Christmas was a blast!

It's not about the gifts - they're very much appreciated but it's really the thought that counts.  It's the presence, and sadly, the absence of the important people in our lives that make celebrating Christmas all the more worthwhile.

Fun Finds at the Christmas Toys and Collectibles 2016

17 December 2016

As Christmas approaches, I pay particular attention to the bazaars and toy fairs that are being held.  I've already inked the Christmas Toys and Collectibles Fair 2016 on my calendar as soon as I saw their ads.   I didn't really have any particular toy in mind but it's always a joy to browse.   I just hated that it was in SM Megamall because parking is terrible there haha So, entrance was P100/head and off we went!

Fantastic Beasts and Krispy Kreme during the kids' day out :)

12 December 2016

There are days when your plan seemed to go awry but actually ending up being better than you hoped.  This was one of those days. Patrick and I were just supposed to do our errands and bring the kids back some Krispy Kreme (as they asked) but we were too early for their promo so I simply went back and brought the kids with me instead, so they had their Kids' Day Out!

Hefty, tasteful dinner at Sambokojin in Megamall

05 December 2016

Even with the proliferation of buffet restaurants in the Metro, we've never had the chance to visit one.  When my niece, Den, called to invite us to dine at Sambokojin, we were ecstatic! :)  We finally have an opportunity to eat both Japanese and Korean dishes until our stomachs burst! :) Here's how it went :)

Free Coffee at Luke's Diner (Toby's Estate Ortigas) from Netflix Gilmore Girls A Year in the Life

02 December 2016

Yesterday, while browsing Facebook, I saw a post on the Netflix page about "Luke's Diner coming to Manila" and I just about flipped out.  I watched the clip and Scott Patterson himself was saying, "Luke's Diner is taking over Toby's Estate (Ortigas).  Grab your free cup!"  I immediately showed the clip to the kids who became as excited as I.

Today, they went to Toby's Estate Ortigas with their Dad to see for themselves how exactly did this coffee shop get turned into Luke's Diner.  Oh and the free cup of coffee was also a major incentive!

Cheetos Quesadilla, A Surprise Reunion and Winning a Desk Fan in Shopwise

30 November 2016

Ever since we all saw the Cheetos Quesadilla teaser ad from Taco Bell on Facebook, we all wanted to try it out.  Who wouldn't?  It's got Cheetos, Cheese, and our favorite Quesadilla!  So, when we planned to do our Christmas shopping in Cubao, particularly in Shopwise, we immediately put Cheetos Quesadillas on the agenda since there was a Taco Bell in Gateway Cubao! :)

It was a pretty serendipitous day as I also found out that an old friend was in the area and we were able to meet up after a long time of not seeing each other :) And in Cubao of all places! haha

We also won a 12" Desk Fan from Shopwise and we didn't even know why and how?!
