Dylan's Foundation Day participation in school

28 September 2017

This is another first for Dylan education-wise.  Today, he celebrated the school's 95th Year Anniversary together with his classmates, schoolmates, teachers and staff.  They prepared a dance routine and performed it as part of the school's Foundation Day Celebration.

As any parent with a child on the autism spectrum, events like these mark milestones to be remembered.  It's special because it shows your child's progress in dealing with crowds. It shows how your child copes with a specific routine (like dancing) and ability to follow directions.  It tests your child's patience while waiting for his turn.  Dylan exceeded all of these today and I'm so proud of him!

At first, I didn't think that we'd have any special school events scheduled in September. But I was wrong.  A week prior to the actual day of celebration, we were informed by Dylan's Teacher that they were to practice a dance routine with the other SPED classes.  So, we asked what it was for?  To our surprise, it was for the Foundation Day!  We didn't really have a parents' orientation so, personally, I don't know anything about the school.  I should have researched more of it and though I know that it has been a long-standing school, it surprised me that it was in fact 95 years old! :)

Anyway, it was maybe because of the significance of the event that kids in all levels were given school bags by the City of Manila.  Dylan's class was also given their PE Uniforms just in time to be their "costume" for their dance routine.  The kids were excited to wear them.  At first, we didn't think that the uniforms would be given in time and we were told to let the kids just come in wearing jogging pants and a white shirt.  We even had to buy a new pair of jogging pants for Dylan haha But the morning of the Foundation Day, Teacher Ressie happily gave each student his PE Uniform set!

The time neared for the kids to get ready.  They practiced the routine a couple of times while in the room using their props.  We (my co-parents and I) actually did these ring things haha We had nothing to do while we waited for our kids so we decided to just make the rings ourselves haha  It was easy enough to do anyway :)

Then, we were told that we could come down and join the other classes.  The kids just sat on the ground.  However, they were getting a bit agitated maybe because of the hectic energy, the noise, the heat and the nervousness.

But, in the end, they rallied and did what they had to do.  It was just disappointing that I didn't get a good video of them.  There was actually a barricade so that parents won't get too near.  That was so they wouldn't be obstructing the view.  But, the thing is, our kids were placed next to bigger kids and we couldn't really see them well.

After their performance, everyone went back to the room to rest and have their snacks :)  As you can see, some of them looked a bit tired :)
