2018 Calayan Adventure - Day 03 - Hiking to Sibang Cove

02 April 2018

Aaah!  Sibang Cove - pristine white sand, blue-green waters, relative isolation... you're worth the 40 minute, grueling hike....

This was where we decided to have our family pictorial to commemorate the reunion of the Paypon siblings.

Food for the picnic was brought over by lampitaw, including relatives who weren't able to make the trek.

Happy to share our pictures with you! :)

The night before, we were informed that the itinerary for today included Malangsi Falls and then Sibang Cove.  However, plans changed and we only ended up going to Sibang Cove.  There was a flurry of activity as we all packed our bags for swimming and the family pictorial. Even the house staff were buzzing with activity because they're preparing to take the food for the picnic via lampitaw.

Before, we traveled to Sibang Cove via lampitaw.  We were supposed to visit Malangsi Falls to but the waves were strong.  This time, we were hiking to Sibang.

Around 8AM, we started loading ourselves onto the hired "kuliglig" transports.  A kuliglig is like a tractor pulling a trailer (sitting area) behind.

Twenty minutes later, we ran out of road! haha  We all had to get off and hike from this point onward.  Since the kuliglig can only take around 8 people a trip, we went in batches and some of our family already made the trip earlier.

So here we are at the start of our trek up the mountain (at least I call it a mountain) haha  When I say trek, I mean it.  My legs were burning from this first incline alone haha But granted I was carrying 4 bottles of water in my bag LOL

After 20 minutes of walking and climbing, the ocean is in sight. But more trekking ahead... The cement road had disappeared and we're now walking on a dirt trail...

10 minutes more, and there's this bend where you can definitely hear the sound of crashing waves...

And boom! This is the view that greets you as you come out from the trail...

Just a few more steps to reach the shaded part of Sibang Cove... Once we got there, I immediately dropped my bag and drank water haha and then brought out the camera and started snapping pictures.. You just can't help yourself.. everything is Instragamable hehe

After we have all caught our breath and rested our aching legs and thighs, we were told to change into our pictorial clothes :)  And then, SMILE! :)

Basically, after the photo shoot, it's a free for all.  We were free to do whatever we wanted haha  So some just took the time to rest, others grabbed a beer and talked up a storm, others went swimming and braved the strong waves.  We weren't brave enough for the waves so we went to the other side of Sibang and just hung out at the tide pools.

I slipped on that rock beside me LOL

Sibang's version of "Finding Nemo"
After swimming, we opted for more pictures on the other side of the giant rocks...

So that was Sibang.  Actually, as we were taking pictures in this area, and we saw the trail that we were supposed to hike back, the kids and I suddenly realized that we have to hike back the way we came LOL And we were dismayed because we were tired LOL

We started heading back around 3PM and you can just imagine the dread we were feeling haha But fortunately, we weren't hiking back! yay!  There were motorcycles waiting for us at the trail and they were taking us, one by one, back to the house :)

It was a thrilling ride back, let me tell you! haha The narrow curves and the steep incline will take your breath away.  I'm sure our driver was feeling the strong grip I had on his shoulders LOL

Anyway, when we all got back, we rested for a bit and then we got back on the kuliglig and went to visit our Lolo Victor and Lola Iling at the cemetery.

We headed back with a kuliglig full of kids :)

Man, that was a tiring but full day.   I think we all headed to dinner afterwards and then retired to our rooms at the San Jose Inn for the night.  We're glad that the San Jose Inn (which is family-owned) has been built because otherwise we'd all be cramming in the ancestral house and I don't think we'd have all fit even if we tried LOL
