Donating your electrical wastes thru The E-Waste Project

12 April 2019

Today, we donated our electrical and electronic wastes thru The E-waste Project so that, in our own little way, we can contribute to better disposal and management of e-wastes to protect our environment.

The E-Waste Project collection drive this year was held from April 8-12,  from 8AM-5PM at the UP College of Engineering Lawn.

Check out their Facebook page for updates on when future collection drives will take place.

I've always been a regular "de-clutter-er", if there even is such a word.  I try to constantly remove old clothes, toys, books and most of the time, find charitable organizations to donate them to.  Electric appliances and electronic gadgets however are not so easy to donate, especially if they're broken or phased out.  So what happens is that I have no recourse but to bring them to the junk shop or wait for those men in pushcarts or "kariton" to sell them to.

But I've been meaning to find alternative ways of disposing these e-wastes because I've read and heard of so many things that we're doing wrong to our environment when we dispose of them using the traditional junk shops.

I found the solution in The E-Waste Project, a movement that aims to raise awareness and educate people about proper Electronic Waste Management through symposia and annual collection drives.  I actually messaged them through their Facebook page last October 2018 asking about their next collection drive and then I started following them on FB so that if they held a new event, I'd be able to bring all my old and broken e-wastes.

So, when they announced a week-long collection drive for April, I immediately scoured my house for everything that I could bring to the venue.

They posted this infographic on their FB Page to inform people what they could actually bring to donate.  You may use this a a reference for your future de-cluttering and recycling efforts.

This is the list of what we brought and donated last April 12:

  • 5.1 Speaker System
  • 2 DVD players
  • 1 Electric Kettle
  • 5 mobile phones
  • 1 Digital camera
  • 1 portable sewing machine
  • 1 DVD-ROM drive
  • 1 Hard Drive
  • 1 Printer
  • 1 Computer CPU
  • several power banks
  • 1 laptop
  • 2 Electronic toys

We arrived at the UP College of Engineering Lawn around 4PM.  We were cutting it a little close because Patrick had an earlier event.  Anyway, we knew we were in the right place because we could see all the donated items on the ground.  :)  The volunteers approached our vehicle to help bring the stuff out and we were grateful because some of them were rather heavy.

Basically, we only had to register and had our picture taken for posterity and that's it.  I did ask for a picture of the volunteers and they graciously agreed :)  Thanks guys!

Of course, you also have the option of donating your TVs and other electrical appliances that still work to other people, like family, like what I usually do with TVs and radios and such.  But if nobody wants them, even if they're working, then just wait for The E-Waste Project to schedule another collection drive :)
