Sta. Catalina College: A Night of Broadway Musical

24-25 November 2018

On November 24 and 25, Sta. Catalina College staged a benefit show entitled "A Night of Broadway Musical" directed by Ms. Christine Palanca.

Dana was part of the ensemble cast of Les Miserables and they (almost the whole school)  practiced for this production for almost 3 months.  Other sets included Annie, The Little Mermaid, Miss Saigon, Rock of Ages and the Lion King.

A few months ago, Dana came home all excited and told us that auditions were held at school for a Broadway musical that they will be doing.  They auditioned as a group and they were told they passed and that their parts will be announced during the Parent Orientation meeting.

Fast forward to that meeting and we found out that she was going to be part of the ensemble cast of Les Miserables together with her other classmates.  She's so excited because she knows all the songs that will be presented in the show.  In fact, I think she was the only one who knew ALL the songs among her classmates and schoolmates LOL

Anyway, after months of preparations and rehearsals, the weekend arrived for their performance.  We were as excited as she was! :)  She had to come to school with makeup on so we just put some makeup to coordinate with her costume.  I couldn't take pictures of her with her costume on since upon reaching the school they had to stay in their dressing rooms.

The program was scheduled to start at 630 PM.  We were there at 530 and for once, everyone was early :)  I was surprised because usually parents would arrive late hehe but this time, there was a buzz and everyone was early out of excitement probably :)

The program opened with the National Anthem and a few Opening Remarks from the SCC President, Sr. Daisy Fornan, OP.

The first set was from "Sister Act" and presented by selected parents.

The 2nd set was performed by special guests from the Halili Cruz Dance Company.

Next came the first production from the students, Aladdin.  This was such a colorful presentation you can't help but be in awe :)

Jasmine and Aladdin
The kids from "Annie" were next.  This was a joy to watch because it involves younger kids.  It's so nice to see them be at home on stage. :)  Since I watched twice, the first during their first run and the 2nd during their final run, I was fortunate to watch two different students take on the role of Annie.

Next in line was "The Little Mermaid".  This production was a sight to behold as well.  It was colorful and entertaining.  The smaller kids were too cute and even the jellyfish were cleverly done :)

Next came the Disney princesses with their respective theme songs - Snow White, Princess Aurora, Ariel, Mulan and Pocahontas :)

Moving on, it's time for the teenagers to take the stage with Miss Saigon.  The first time, a student played Kim and the 2nd time that I watched, it was Ms. Viv (the director) who played the role.

I knew that after Miss Saigon, it was Les Miserables.  I sat upright in my seat hoping to immediately see Dana.  During the first time I watched, she was like the Flash.. she was on stage one sec and then gone the next.  The stage and the lights don't exactly allow everyone to be seen.

During the 2nd time, I was fortunate to be able to snap this somewhat blurred shot of her.  That was one of the reasons why I had to watch it a second time.  I was so busy looking for her that I wasn't able to actually watch their set! LOL  But honestly, their production was riveting!

When Dana was talking about how their rehearsals went, she would always tell us that The Lion King part was one that she really liked.  She said I'd get goosebumps.  And it was true!  The Lion King is my favorite Disney movie and I really love the music.  To see it played on stage, like this, is such a pleasure!  For me, it was by far the best of the night!

The last set was from "Rock of Ages".  It was a good choice for the last set because the music was popular and the audience was gladly singing with the students :)

During the final run, the curtain call was bittersweet.  Imagine all the months of practice that they had to go through in addition to having to maintain the balance between this and their regular classes.  Sometimes, Dana was so exhausted that she would just drop dead on her bed.  But all their hard work paid off because they did a splendid job!  This was a first for Sta. Catalina and I was glad that Dana was a part of it!

Now, Dana wants to take up Theater Arts and it's all thanks to Ms. Viv :)

Congratulations Dana for a job well done!  I hope that the next time there's a production you'll be part of the main cast hahaha
